General architectural coating manufacturers should carry out the following routine performance inspections for the purchased emulsion.
(1) General visual inspection of appearance. Observe the hue of the emulsion and whether there are particles and impurities.
(2) Viscosity Since polymer emulsions are mostly non-Newtonian fluids, the instrument used to determine the viscosity of emulsions should be able to determine the relationship between shear stress and shear rate in a wide range of shear rates. A rotary viscometer is usually used to determine the viscosity of the emulsion, and a Tu-4 cup is generally not used.
(3) Determination of non-volatile content Weigh about 1g of polymer emulsion sample into a flat-bottomed disk with a diameter of about 75cm to ensure that the sample is evenly dispersed on the surface of the disk, and then place it in an oven equipped with a ventilation device. After drying at 150℃ for 15min and weighing, the non-volatile content can be calculated.
(4) The pH value is measured with precision test paper or a suitable type of pH value meter.
(5) The residue can be filtered with a 120-mesh screen to filter a certain amount of emulsion, depending on whether there is agglomerates on the screen, if the screen is blocked, the emulsion cannot be used.
