Patent leather is a type of glossy coated leather. The coating process was introduced in the United States and improved in 1818 by the inventor of Newark, New Jersey, Seth Boyden, and began commercial production on September 20, 1819. Boyden's process (he didn't apply for a patent) uses a flaxseed oil-based method. Modern patent leather usually has a plastic coating.
In general, patent leather is a fine-grained leather that has been treated to give it a glossy look. Patent leather was mentioned as early as 1793 in the British periodicals "Bee" or "Informant" in "Literature Weekly". The book, titled "Patent Leather of Hands," was patented by the United Kingdom for Birmingham's "Gentleman in Handname." A patent that manufactures soft leather with luster and luster that becomes impermeable just by wiping with a sponge and regains its original luster. In November 1799, Holborn's inventor, Edmund Praia, in London, England, obtained a patent. Methods used to paint and color various leathers; in 1805, the inventor patented a combination of chemicals. "Beautiful luster". However, the main achievement of patent leather is Sesboyden.
In 1818, Boyden received German-made patent leather (known as the cover of the German military cap) from a local carriage manufacturer and could use it to produce such treated leather in the United States. This material is arguably more beautiful than work boots and similar leather products, but still maintains ideal protection and durability. By reverse engineering European patent leather, he found a way to make his own patent leather. This new shiny leather went into commercial production on September 20, 1819, using a series of coatings based on flaxseed oil. Thanks to Boyden's efforts, the production of smooth paint leather has rapidly become widespread and complements formal wear. Boyden has never applied for a patent for his invention process.
Later, the use of plastic can make patent leather cheaper. After all, synthetic resin further simplifies the process, further reduces manufacturing costs, and enables large-scale production of patent leather.
In the British trend of the 1960s, shoes, boots and handbags were usually made of patent leather or vinyl.
