Dip coating is an industrial coating method, for example, used to manufacture bulk products (such as coated fabrics and condoms), and, for example, special coatings used in the biomedical field. Dip coating is also a commonly used coating in academic research. Many chemical and nanomaterial engineering research projects use dip coating technology to produce thin film coatings.
The earliest dip-coated product may be candles. For flexible layered substrates such as fabrics, dip coating can be performed as a continuous roll-to-roll process. For coated 3D objects, simply insert or remove them from the coating tank. To make the condom, the former is soaked in the coating. For some products (such as early candle manufacturing methods), this process will be repeated multiple times, stacking a series of films on a relatively thick final object.
As in the case of condoms, the final product can be incorporated into the substrate and coating, or the coating can be stripped to form an object consisting only of the dried or cured coating.
As a common alternative to spin coating, the dip coating method is often used to prepare thin films from sol-gel precursors for research purposes because the method applies the thin films to flat or cylindrical substrates.
